This chapter applies metabolic scaling theory to explore how several aspects of mammal life history—namely, production rates of females and body sizes, sexual ornaments, and weapons of males—vary with body size. The results show the scaling of rates of production, birth, and death with female body size as M− ¼; and the positive scaling of male sexual ornaments and weapons, as Mb, where b > 1.
