This introductory chapter begins by reviewing the long history of the study of body size in scientific discourse. It considers some of the important questions that remain unaddressed by any subdiscipline of biology. It then sets out the two parts of the book and talks about the topics they are going to cover. Each part includes chapters that reflect different taxonomic, hierarchical, and/or scientific perspectives.
