Chapter 5 looks at the changes to teen room decor that emerged after the Second World War. Several trends are emphasized, including the growing spending power of teenagers, the means by which business interests courted the teen demographic, and the proliferation of various bedroom-oriented consumer items (e.g. furnishings, posters, and knick-knacks). Decor experts continued to act as mediators between teens and the business community during this era, but their continued emphasis on child-centered design strategies undermined their authority in a far reaching manner. Indeed, by the 1960s and 1970s, the curated strategies that had dominated during the 19th- and early 20th centuries had been replaced with a strong do-it-yourself ethic that emphasized found items and a rather chaotic brand of self-expression.
