The world of popular music and the world of jazz associated with it change all the time. This chapter provides a short overview of these changes over the last 150 years or so, before analyzing one major change that has affected musicians: from a music based on popular songs known to “everyone” to a more esoteric one based on original jazz compositions far removed from the musical experience of the general listening public. This change took place in three areas, and the three occurred simultaneously, each creating the conditions for the others. Changes in venues—from bars, nightclubs, and dance halls to jazz clubs and concert halls—resulted from changes in audiences and what they wanted to hear, but also created new kinds of audiences for new kinds of music. All these changes produced a great change in the repertoire and led to troubles for players when they had to get it together on the bandstand, troubles fueled by a moral interpretation of repertoire.
